What is an MOT Test?

MOT test stands for Ministry of Transport Test, the MOT test was originally introduced way back in 1960 to make sure that vehicles are safe and in a proper roadworthy condition.

The sheer number of vehicles on today’s roads is far beyond anything that would have been imagined way back in the swinging 60’s

The MOT test has changed a great deal over time as the vehicle types and technologies have adapted and changed.

Vehicles on the road fall into different categories or “classes” with the vast majority of cars being “Class 4”. Each differing class of vehicle will have slightly differing checks however the aim across each classification remains the same, to ensure that vehicles using the road are in a mechanically sound state, and increasingly are environmentally friendly.

The MOT inspection testing and issuing of the certificates can only be done by authorised test centres who have to pass certain criteria in order to be able to issue MOT certificates. In the UK there are over 20,000 differing centres and our DAT Depots have the latest testing and diagnostic equipment, in our depots offering MOT testing in London all our engineers are fully trained and accredited MOT testers.

DAT Tyres offer an easy to use online booking system to book an MOT test at one of our London MOT centres. We have MOT testing service for Hertfordhsire, Hammersmith, Harlesden and other areas. Simply fill out your vehicle details online and select the branch, date and time that suits you best, we will do the rest.

Certain vehicles such as Ambulances and Taxis are required to have an MOT test after 1 year on the road, then every year from then onwards, this is due to the exceptionally high mileage these vehicles can be subjected to. The vast majority of cars need to have an MOT test once they reach 3 years of age and then every year after that for the life of the vehicle. There are some types of vehicle that are exempt from the MOT test such as Tractors and vehicles manufactured before 1960, check with your local MOT centre or on the government website for details. For detailed information check out the government website https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/the-mot-test.

According to the Driver Vehicle & Licensing Agency the test will cover checks of the following to ensure it meets the minimum standard:

Lamps Reflectors & Electrical.
  • Headlamps, Stop lamps, Fog Lamps, Indicators, Hazard warning lights.
  • Reflectors, car horn
  • General check of electrical wiring & battery.

Whilst we have included a lot of what is in the test it is not a fully comprehensive list and also the DVSA may change the test criteria at any time.

There are a number of places you can find an MOT test centre, however here at DAT Tyres we have a number of MOT centres in London and the Home Counties to choose from.

  • MOT Test Centre London Queens Park is situated in Kensal Green
  • MOT Test Centre London Hammersmith is located in Glenthorne Road
  • MOT Test Centre London Haresden is located in the High Street  Harlesden

If you live outside London we also have an MOT centre in Baldock Hertfordshire

The amount you will have to pay for an MOT Test varies upon which class of vehicle you have. Class 1 motorcycles are *£29.65 although side cars are more expensive.

Cars in class 4 are currently *£54.85 whilst Passenger Vehicles with over 16 seats are currently *£124.50.

*pricing as at April 2017.

Please note that this information is not comprehensive, merely an attempt to give you sufficient information to be infomed as to what is involved in an MOT test.

If your vehicle fails an MOT test you can still drive it away providing your current certificate is still in date.

There is an appeals procedure that you can follow to contest the decision to fail a vehicle, details are available at test centres and online on https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/after-the-test

Most test centres have the capacity to arrange to fix any problems in order to get the vehicle to pass the minimum standard requirements as laid down in the MOT Test.
